REGULAR SCREENING MAY

DETECT CANCER EARLY

In 2023, more than 1.9 million Americans were expected to be diagnosed with cancer – and early detection remains our best bet for treatment.5

CERVICAL CANCER

In the past, cervical cancer was one of the most common causes of cancer deaths for American women, but survival rates significantly improved with the increase use of regular screening tests. The goal of cervical cancer screening is to find pre-cancer or cancer early when it is more treatable and curable.5 Regular screening can help prevent cervical cancers and save lives.5

65%

There has been a 65% reduction in cervical cancer incidence rates from 2012 through 2019, the time during which young people ages 20 to 24 were first to receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.5

92%

When diagnosed at the local stage, the 5-year survival rate is 92%.5

Cervical cancer screening

Not everyone with HPV will get cervical cancer but most cases are caused by HPV.5

The tests for cervical cancer screening are the HPV test and Pap test.5,13

The Primary HPV test is an HPV test that is done by itself for screening. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved certain tests to be primary HPV tests.14

The HPV test looks for infection by high-risk types of HPV that are more likely to cause precancers and cancers of the cervix.14

The Pap test looks at the cells taken from the cervix to find changes that might be cancer or pre-cancer.5

People at average risk ages 65+ should stop testing if results from regular screening in the past 10 years were negative, with the most recent test within the past 5 years.5

People who got the HPV vaccine should follow the same screening plan.5

The most important thing to remember is to get screened, no matter which test you get.15
